History

Through the teaching of History in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 we provide opportunities for the development of key skills: sequencing, cause and effect, reasoning, enquiry, constructing the past and chronological awareness. There are opportunities to respond to artefacts, pictures and written sources and to present the results of enquiries including written narratives. The children will learn about Ancient Civilisations to the present day as well as the history of Britain and the wider world, alongside studying significant individuals from the past. Chiltern Open Air Museum

On Wednesday 18th June year 3 were lucky to spend the day at the Chiltern Open Air Museum. They spent the day exploring both the Stone Age where they made fire, explored Stone Age housing by ensuring it was watertight using animal skins and making their own paint using charcoal and vegetable fats. They then moved on to look at the Iron Age where groups spent time milling flour to make bread. Others spent time outside churning cream to make butter and then designing their own clay pots. All of the children had a fantastic day and the staff at the museum commented on their brilliant attitudes and inquisitive natures!

Mountfitchet Castle

Year 5 spent the day visiting Mountfitchet Castle in support of their recent history topic.

VE Day

As a school, we celebrated the 80th Anniversary of VE Day. All of our children took part by wearing red, white or blue clothing as well as taking part in various activities dedicated to each year the war took place. During special assemblies we remembered the brave people who fought for freedom. The streets parties held 80 years ago were replicated with our class picnics in the afternoon.

Knebworth House

Year 2 had a wonderful day at Knebworth House. They had lots of fun learning Tudor dancing, writing and dressing up in Tudor clothes. They explored the grounds where Queen Elizabeth I lived and learned all about Tudor food. They really enjoyed the treasure trail.

History in Year 6

In the Autumn term Year 6 went on a school trip to Bletchley Park. Whilst we were there we had a guided tour where we learnt more about what the day to day activities would have been for the people who were working there. We also took part in a code breaking activity where we had to find out where the lost enigma machine was. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day at Bletchley.
