Design and Technology

Intent

At St Anthony’s Primary School we want our children to be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real-life purpose.

We intend for every child to have the opportunity to:

• Promote spiritual development through helping the children to recognise their own creativity and the creativity of others
• Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
• Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
• Analyse, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
• Develop important life skills by understanding and applying the principles of nutrition and learning how to cook.

Year 2- Pouches

Year 2 have been busy designing pouches. They have learnt how to prepare and cut fabrics as well as complete a running stitch to join materials together. The final products look brilliant!

Year 3

Year 3 have been designing and making Pneumatic Toys as part of their Autumn Term topic. They have explored different toys before designing their own and making them for a purpose.

DT in Nursery

Whilst reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Nursery learnt how to follow instructions to make their own porridge. They also sorted materials.

Nursery explored how to make their own bridges like the troll’s bridge in the Three Billy Goats Gruff. They also thought about what the troll would look like and created their own craft trolls.

Nursery created binoculars by connecting kitchen rolls with masking tape.  We used them to bird watch in the garden.

During Harvest, Nursery baked their own bread rolls, just like the Little Red Hen did.

DT in Reception

Reception spent the Spring Term baking to raise money for charity.  They made different baked goods each week and then sold them after school.  They made £600 for the Watford Food Bank.

We have been learning how to join materials in different ways, using tape, spilt pins and we even had a try at weaving.

In Reception, we try so hard to learn to cut accurately. We learn how to hold our scissors correctly and to follow the line carefully.     

We have been learning how to cut our fruit during our snack time. We have been focusing on how to hold our safety knife correctly and how we hold our fruit safely as well.

DT in Year 5

K’Nex Challenge

Year 5 took part in a STEM day. They worked with Roseanna, an industry volunteer, and were challenged to construct a bulldozer using Connex. They were not given any instructions. At the end of the session winning pairs were selected from both classes.

DT in Year 6

As part of our Autumn DT topic we designed and created our own cross stitch Christmas cards.
