Reading and Phonics

At St Anthony’s we want children to leave EYFS with the skills necessary to read simple sentences and the
enthusiasm to read and engage with texts. We also want to cultivate a lifelong love of reading. We follow the Read, Write Inc scheme of work and hold multiple workshops throughout the year to support parents and children.

Core Books and Must Read Books for Nursery

Throughout each term the children will read a selection of core books and base their learning and activities around these. The list of core books is below as we find many of our Nursery children who have little English language benefit from pre-reading the books at home with their families.  We also read one of our ‘Must Read Books’ every day, before home time, to encourage a love for reading by becoming familiar with some favourite ‘must reads’.

Reception Core Books

Throughout each term the children will read a selection of core books and base their learning and activities around these.  We encourage our Reception children to predict and infer when listening to these stories and so instead of publishing our list online, we let our parents know about our books in our weekly updates, after we have read them.

Story Videos

These videos are a selection of some of our must read books. They have been recorded by staff as good examples of how to read to children and are also available if you do not have access to these stories at home.
